Unruly Crowds to Be Pepper Sprayed by Lucknow Police's Drones in India

While the Federal Aviation Administration is still working on a proper Unmanned Aerial Vehicle regulation, on the other side of the planet drones will soon be part of the police’s gadgetry. It appears that Lucknow, the capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh, is about to become India’s first city to use autonomous drones in order to control unruly crowds.

At least the police won’t shoot protestors like they sometimes do in other countries, is probably what you’re thinking. But you’re only half right since these drones will use pepper powder to disperse mobs in the city.

Lucknow Police has recently announced they have purchased five drones designed with cameras that are about to take aerial snaps. The difference to the already existing UAVs the local authorities are using for surveillance is that these new additions are capable of carrying small weights on board too. In other words, the Indian city has just officially become what is probably the first to use mob-controlling drones.

We have purchased five drone cameras with the capacity of lifting two kg (4.4 lbs) weight. They can be used to shower pepper powder on an unruly mob in case of any trouble,” Senior Superintendent of Police Yashasvi Yadav said, according to Times of India.

The new acquisition is in fact part of a bigger police modernization initiative that includes a modern headquarters facility that will manage the city’s “Dial 100” helpline. Here is also the place where the UAVs will be monitored.

The drones can fly up to 600 meters (1,968 feet) high in an one kilometer (0.6 mile) radius while one unit can cost up to Rs 6 lakhs ($9,632).
