Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan R-Line Unveiled with Exterior and Interior Upgrades

Ever wanted an MPV from a German car manufacturer that comes with a body kit straight out of the box? Of course you did, but until now, you could only buy one from BMW and Mercedes. Volkswagen joined in the fun today with the first R-Line package available for the Golf Sportsvan.

Of course, it's the first one since the Golf Sportsvan is a new nameplate that replaces the Golf Plus. It's a perfectly reasonable MPV, or Tourer as the Germans call them, available with all kind of efficient engines shared with the regular Golf.

You might not be able to get the Sportsvan with the same 300 PS punch in the face as the Golf R, but thanks to the design efforts of Volkswagen R, it can look the part while packing only 150 PS.

The "first stage" of tuning is the exterior body kit, costing €1,105 in Germany. This consists of the R-Line front and rear bumpers together with sill extensions. The most distinctive features are the R-Line upper grille and the larger air intakes with black blades.

We appreciate Volkswagen's sincerity. Even though it's got the R logo, the body kit does not fool you into thinking this is a real Golf R. Instead, the body kit somewhat resembles that of the 2016 Tiguan. The same cannot be said about Mercedes' dressed-up B-Class models, which get twin exhaust pipes and AMG-specific wheels. The "amateurs" might believe that a 109 PS 180 d can keep up with an RS3.

Further polishing the Golf Sportsvan's look are dark tinted taillights, an exhaust trim piece, and anodized silver roof rails... for your racing bike rack.

If you're dead set on making this the coolest Sportsvan on the road, you can also add another expensive option. The R-Line interior package is a whopping €1,800 and comes with all of the above plus new seats that have a racing look, inner side supports in a cool microfiber fabric, a sports steering wheel covered in leather, stainless steel pedals, and front door sills with the R-Line logo.

Optionally, the same Golf-based people carrier can be fitted with 17-inch "Salvador" alloy wheels or 18-inch alloy wheels of type "Salvador," "Marseille," or "Serron."

Overall, it's not a bad-looking machine, but we managed to get ours to cost €40,000 thanks to LED lights and adaptive cruise control. Not that the Sportsvan doesn't look cool, but we wonder who would want to pay this much for one.
