Volkswagen Gives Seven e-Golf Models to Lower Saxony Police

Europe's largest car company by volume announced today that it has donated no less than seven electric cars to the Lower Saxony Police. The Volkswagen e-Golf models will no-doubt do a great job of protecting the environment on their daily patrol, since they don't use a single gram of petrol or emit any gasses.

These first electric cars appear to be only the beginning of something much bigger, since the official press statement tells us five more e-Golf will be delivered in coming weeks.

Perhaps just as interesting as the environment impact of such a move is the financial one. Electric cars are by no means cheap and the e-Golf makes this abundantly clear with its retail price of almost exactly €35,000. In total, the 12 examples currently planed for delivery cost €420,000 or $526,000.

Volkswagen also stands to gain something. The brightly livered electric police cars stand out in the crowd and will receive a lot of attention during their patrols. Considering this is their first-ever electric car, every bit of extra media coverage or public recognition goes a long way.

The e-Golf is powered by an electric motor producing 85 kW / 115 hp. Its performance is similar to that of a normal diesel-engined hatchback, as 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.4 seconds. Depending on the route, driving skill and number of people carried, Lower Saxony policemen should expect to spend anywhere from 130 to 190 kilometers out on patrol between charges. The bad news is it's not going to feel as sporty as a regular Golf, since 218 kilograms of "battery" has been added to the underbody of the car, which makes it quite heavy.

Besides the normal setup, the e-Golf comes with two selectable driving modes, called Eco and Eco+ are available at the touch of a button. Eco’ cuts peak power to 70 kW / 95 PS, reduces the output of the air conditioning system and modifies the accelerator response.  Top speed is reduced to 120 km/h (74 mph) and 0-62 mph takes 12.1 seconds.  ‘Eco+’ limits maximum power to 55 kW / 75 PS and top speed to just 90 km/h (56 mph), while the accelerator response is much reduced and the air conditioning disabled completely.
