Some four years ago, the donkey old Volkswagen Fox city car was replaced by the curiously named up!. Together with the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo, the little bugger went to become not just a huge commercial success in Europe, but also one of the best overall packages of the city car segment.
Underpinned by the NSF platform (also known as the Typ AA or PQ12) and powered by economical three-cylinder engines, we reviewed the up! some time ago and concluded that “It offers the rolling refinement and boot space of a car belonging to the bigger segment, it really knows what efficiency means, it’s easy to play with around town and will even perform emergency stops...”

Because it’s already 4 years old now and a mid-cycle facelift is still nowhere in sight, Volkswagen tries to milk whatever is left of the up!’s appeal by offering a plethora of special edition models. Two of the latest editions come in the form of the UK specification Volkswagen Street up! and Club up!. Compared to the entry-level Take up! trim, priced from £8,765, the Street up! and Club up! start from a hefty £11,995.

The 75 PS and 95 Nm (70 lb-ft) 1.0 three-pot petrol isn’t something to get your heart racing...

Truth be told, the price difference between the two special editions and the base model boils down to lots of equipment from the get-go, as well as some pretty neat visual details.

Based on the top-of-the-range High up!, both of the special editions add lots of kit for just £610 extra. The Volkswagen Street up! adds 16-inch Upsilon alloys, a choice of three special exterior paint jobs (Pure White, Black Pearl, Reflex Silver), tinted windows, Street badging, decals, leather on the steering wheel, up! scuff plates with yellow striping and a unique Street up! cloth upholstery.

As for the nightlife-oriented Club up!, this edition adds 16-inch Triangle wheels, standard Blueberry metallic paint or a less special Black Pearl paint, Club badging everywhere and Club up! Tartan Tonic cloth upholstery. What do you think, are £610 pounds enough to justify these add-ons?
