Volkswagen are looking to explore and exploit the potential of green technologies in recent times, and the upcoming VW Camper could be the next model to feature an all-electric powertrain.
Volkswagen officials confirmed that the carmaker is considering "electrification and battery power" but there's more than the eco-friendly purpose behind that.

As unusual as it may sound, VW wants to keep the Camper's old-school look inspired by the original car born in the 50s. And guess what: the only way to successfully doing that is by using an electric motor powered by batteries positioned beneath the floor.

“If we want to do this on an attractive cost base, we are not able to put a rear engine into such a car. When we put such a vehicle on the base of the modular transverse kit, we can use it as a battery electric vehicle – because the e-motor is much smaller than a combustion engine and we can build it in another way," said Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser in an interview for Autoexpress, during the 2015 New York International Auto Show.

Mr. Neusser added that VW engineers are working towards this goal, but didn't give further details about when we should expect the Camper/Bulli EV concept, but past rumors said it would come in 2019 as a Beetle derivative.

However, his statement hints that the car will be underpinned by VW's MQB modular platform. Hopefully, designers will be able to keep the recognizable boxy shape and the signature D-pillars. All we have to do is keep an eye on future auto shows and see if Volkswagen will keep their word.
