Because it's not a high-volume car, the second-generation Volkswagen Passat CC is only supposed to come out in 2017, after the new SUVs the Germans have planned. But because the designers have completed their part and are so chuffed with the results, they're being allowed to show a preview concept sooner rather than later. According to a report from Auto Motor und Sport, the CC concept will be shown as early as March's Geneva Motor Show, less than two months from now.
The current model is still a very sexy four-door coupe, but much will change from one generation to the next. Previous reports claimed VW wants to completely transform the coupe lineup, which is bleeding money. The Eos will be scrapped, the Scirocco will be completely different and the CC will be made more practical, a budget alternative to the CLS and A7.

And Like the Audi A7, it will get a 5-door body with a large tailgate that fits larger suitcases and sports equipment.

Underpinned by the same MQB platform as the Passat, it will be lighter and stiffer. Interior space, fuel economy and power will all be improved. A host of new engines will be added and there's a good chance the engine range will be completely turbocharged, dropping the current V6 in favor of a Golf R engine or even the new six-cylinder turbos we've heard will be developed for crossovers.

Remember, we're looking to see a preview concept in Geneva, so there's no point to start saving money quite yet. We're betting they will throw the usual barrage of clamshell seats, numerous electric motors and "world first technologies". But all we want to know is if it's better looking than an Audi A5 and much cheaper.

The CC history lesson

Originally known as the Passat CC, this four-door coupe made its debut at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. According to the German automaker, CC is short for Comfort Coupe and the model is supposed to fit in the range between the Passat and the Phaeton.

The current model rides on a 2,711 mm (106.7 in) wheelbase and is available with a whole host of engines, including a 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 TSI petrol. Top-spec cars get the 3.6-liter VR6 couple with 4Motion all-wheel drive and a six-speed DSG box.

In 2012, a mid-life facelift was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show and went on sale shortly after. The name was shorted to CC and many safety features were added, including Front Assist, Side Assist and Lane Assist.
