Volvo Launches Its S90 Flagship Sedan at 2016 Detroit Auto Show

Right after it was first unveiled in the last month of 2015, Volvo’s S90 was set to be a strong rival in the premium sedan market. Now, the Swedish company launched its newest creation at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, to emphasize its trust and long-term commitment to the US market.

Volvo sold 24.3 percent more vehicles in 2015 compared to 2014. In the final quarter of the year, sales rose by 87 percent in October, 90 percent in November, and 89.9 percent in December. As Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President of the Americas at Volvo Car Group, stated, “These are strong indications that Volvo is back on track in the US. We expect this strong sales momentum to continue in 2016, helped by the new S90.

Before launching the S90, Volvo announced its $11 billion investment program and revealed its plans to build a groundbreaking production facility in Charleston, South Carolina, where it will employ 2,000 workers.

According to Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars Group, “We have always placed great significance on our presence in the US. That is why we decided to present our S90 to the public for the first time at the Detroit show, and why we have begun to build a Volvo factory here.

With the launch of its flagship sedan, the Swedish carmaker writes the second chapter in the complete renewal of its product range, which began in 2015 with the new XC90 SUV. The fact that the XC90 received around 88,000 pre-orders in 2015, surpassing the company’s expectations of around 50,000, was a strong signal that the company was going in the right direction.

When it was first revealed to the world’s press in December, Volvo’s flagship sedan caught everyone’s attention with its stunning exterior and luxurious interior. Some details, such as the concave grille, an homage to the Volvo P1800, or the T-shaped Thor’s Hammer lights, make the S90 an unmistakable presence on the road. Inside the car, engineers created a new dashboard, instrument panel, and vertical air blades on each side of the Sensus user interface.

The new car is powered by a T8 Twin-Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain, producing 410 horsepower. It comes as standard with IntelliSafe Assist that includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Distance Alert and the semi-autonomous drive feature, the Pilot Assist, which gives a gentle steering input to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to around 80 mph.

Another innovative safety feature introduced by the Swedish carmaker is the City Safety. Thanks to this, the car is capable of detecting large animals such as deer, moose or horses, day or night, and avoid collisions with them.
