Volvo's is undoubtedly a major trailblazer in the green car market. And despite the fact that they don't have as much notoriety as Tesla, their projects have paved the way for other companies to launch their own plug-in hybrids. Today, a new one has been revealed, the V60 D5 Twin Engine, which for some reason is going on sale as a special edition model limited to just 500 examples.
Power comes from a diesel engine making 120 kW or 163 HP combined with an electric motor making another 50 kW (68 HP) with the help of a 11.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. The configuration is the same as the one used by the V60 D6 Twin Engine, the best selling PHEV in the European premium segment, so presumably, you also have all-wheel drive, though it's not officially mentioned. However, total output is approximately 230 hp when the electric motor and diesel engine are working simultaneously, Volvo says.
The D5 hybrid is probably a way for Volvo to test out if customers want another version of the V60 that's cheaper or more content-rich. All 500 special edition models will be delivered with the Crystal White exterior paint, 19-inch wheels and gloss black exterior detailing. Inside, the V60 is equipped with a black headliner and piano black trim. The V60 D5 Special Edition will also receive a Blond sport seat upholstery with white stitching as seen in our Volvo Ocean Race editions.

Since then we have been working on further refining our innovative approach to electrification and hybrid powertrains, as can be seen in our brand new XC90 T8 Twin Engine which is just entering full-scale production. With the launch of the V60 D5 Twin Engine Special Edition we are broadening our Twin Engine product range,” said Dr. Thomas Müller, Vice President Electrical and Electronics Systems Engineering at Volvo Car Group.
