Watch What Happened When a BMW i8 Was Let Loose on the Streets of London

The good people over at BMW’s marketing branch in the UK decided it would be a good exercise to see how people react to the i8 on the street. Said and done! The guys took one for a spin and stopped on the way to talk to some of the bystanders that were courageous enough to step in front of the camera.
As you very well know, the design of the i8 is unique and still makes a pretty big impact, no matter that it was unveiled nearly a year ago. The butterfly doors are extremely appealing, but that happens only when the car is stationary and the owner or driver gets in or out.

In the meantime, the i8 looks brilliant while driving down the street. From the new corona rings up front to the sculpted bonnet, the wheels and the rear wings above the fenders, everything looks right, just like a car from this century should look like.

The spectacle doesn’t stop once you get in. The seats are designed especially for it and so is the dash and even the instrument cluster. Well... come to think of it, that’s how it is supposed to be in the first place, considering the technology it has under the skin.

That skin is made of a composite that’s harder than steel and weighs half as much. It’s called CFRP and costs a little more than your average alloy. It was used to make sure the car doesn’t weigh two tons.

Combined with the hybrid powertrain made up of an electric motor with 131 HP and a 3-cylinder internal combustion engine with 231 HP, this 362 HP car will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds.

At the same time, the average mpg sits at over 100 mpg. Quite impressive, right? Well, that’s what Londoners thought about it as well.
