After launching what most people call the BMW bargain of the decade in the shape of the 2 Series Coupe, the Germans are now unveiling the drop top version of the same car at the Paris Motor Show 2014 and we’re showing you the very first live photos of it.
It was a big crowd at BMW’s stand today, as a lot of people were expecting both the new 2 Series Convertible and a surprise unveiling from the Munich-based automaker. Needless to say that the 2er is looking stunning in the flesh.
Compared to its Coupe brother little has changed (excepting the roof, of course). The front fascia is basically the same, with a similar look, differentiated only by a small crease above the air intakes at the bottom of the air intakes.
However, this model is replacing the 1 Series Convertible and compared to it, the differences are more than noticeable. The 2 Series is longer by 72 millimeters and wider by 26 millimeters while the front track has 41 extra millimeters to its side. Round the back, the rear track is also bigger than the one of the 1 Series, with 1 millimeter extra on each side.
Speaking of which, folding or unfolding the soft top will take just 20 seconds and can be done at speeds up to 30 mph (roughly 50 km/h) a lot more than in the case of the 4 Series Convertible.
At first, interested customers will get a choice of 4 different engines, 3 petrol and one diesel. The one diesel is the 220d that comes with the new generation B47 2-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It’s also the most frugal choice of the range but it’s available only in Europe.
The US will get a choice of two petrols, just like the coupe. The 245 HP 228i model will be the entry-level model while the M235i will be the top of the range ‘muscle’. Fitted with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine making 326 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque, this car will accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.2 seconds (0.2 seconds faster when fitted with the automatic 8-speed gearbox). Pricing will start at $33,850 for 228i, which is just $800 more than for a regular Coupe.
