The 5-door MINI hardtop was unveiled at the beginning of this summer but since then there was no major auto show happening to host its world debut in the flesh. The Paris Motor Show 2014 proved to be the perfect place for it though, and the Brits arrived in all their glory in the French capital with their new creation.
Looking the 5-door and 3-door versions straight up from the front fascia, you won’t be able to tell the difference between them. That’s because it resides in the longer wheelbase and stretched body. Move a bit to the side and you’ll notice the extra door handles on the sides.

Compared to the original, the new version is 161 millimeters (6.33 inches) longer overall, 72 millimeters (2.83 inches) residing between the axles alone, offering a bit more space inside, even though the exact numbers don’t seem all that impressive.

There’s 72 millimeters (2.83 inches) extra in the legroom department in the back as well as 15 millimeters (0.59 inches) extra in headroom 61 millimeters extra (2.4 inches) in elbow width. To top it all off, the boot size grew by 67 liters to a grand total of 278 liters.

Everything's more practical

To make sure the more practical people are pleased by the new model, the car also received 60:40 foldable seats in the back that can be upgraded to a bench with 40:20:40 foldable backrests if you want one.

Engine-wise things haven’t changed. Since the extra room and doors do penalize the kerb weight of the car, the new version is a bit slower and takes up more fuel than the 3-door city car.

You get the same 1.5-liter 3-cylinder and 2-liter 4-cylinder plants on the Cooper and Cooper S versions making anywhere between 116 HP and 192 HP, depending on various factors like the fuel used and the size. All of them are available with manual and automatic 6-speed gearboxes.

A premiere will be the Cooper SD model, fitted with the same plant from the revised xDrive20d LCI X3 but with a different output. The 2-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel B47 plant is good for 170 HP and 360 Nm (265 lb-ft) of torque. Hooked up to the automatic gearbox, it will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.3 seconds and return an average fuel consumption of 4.2 l/100 km (56 mpg). Orders are open and deliveries will begin this month as well.
