In case the fact that Yamaha’s new-generation superbikes are literally stuffed with high-end technology needed one more proof, here’s a new reason to celebrate if you plan to buy such a machine. Yamaha unveiled the Y-TRAC app for smartphone and tablet, a software which delivers an unprecedented level of rider- bike communication and interaction.
The Yamaha Y-TRAC is so far designed to work with the race-focused version of the superbike, the 2015 YZF-R1M, but in case it becomes as successful as Yamaha anticipates, we might just see more manufacturers picking up the idea and integrating it with their new machines. Kawasaki, Honda and Suzuki really have something to look up to now…

Describing the app, David Docktor, Motorcycle Marketing Manager for Yamaha says that it “enables riders to connect with their R1M on a level that has never-before been available outside of a factory race team’s pitbox.”

Data logger and GPS integration deliver a new experience

Yamaha’s all-new app makes extensive use of the features the house of Iwata endowed the R1M with, such as the data logger and GPS locator. The sensors on the Yamaha YZF-R1M monitor a huge list of parameters which are being used for providing a complex image of what happens with the bike in certain race scenarios.

The on-board systems record data such as RPM, throttle position, front/rear wheel speed, gear position, lean angle, pitch (front-to-back), front/rear brake pressure, engine coolant temperature, ambient air temperature, fuel usage and acceleration (both forward/backward and side-to-side). Even more, all the YRC system functions are also monitored for seamless integration with Traction Control, Slide Control, Lift Control, Launch Control and Front/Rear Anti-Lock Braking systems.

Riders can transmit the recorded data from the logger via WiFi to the Y-TRAC app and overlay it on the track map. Course mapping and automatic lap times are precise and managed by GPS for ease of use. Riders with sufficient knowledge, or others who know what sport bike setup is can make the necessary adjustments right from the app and then upload the settings to the bike.

Standard on the YZF-R1M, the Yamaha Communication Control Unit (CCU) is also available as optional equipment on the basic R1 version, and can help riders implement cutting-edge racing technology in their “civil” superbikes. The Yamaha CCU Accessory Kit for R1 will become available starting with early June 2015.

So if you’re expecting your YZF-R1M to be delivered to you and have an Android phone, head over to Google Play and download the Yamaha Y-TRAC app for free. iOS users will have to wait some more, Yamaha says, but it won’t be long.
