The Federation Internationale de Motorcyclisme (FIM) has updated the lists of homologated bikes and one of the latest additions to this list is the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1M. This doesn’t come as a surprise, because we sort of saw this coming ever since Yamaha announced that the all-new R1 superbike will be joined at EICMA 2014 by its R1M sibling, which was supposed to be a more racing-oriented version.
This comes to complement the existing homologation for other Yamaha superbikes, namely the 2009 and 2012 model years, with the latter including the facelift and parts updates. The 2015 YZF-R1M got approved in its forged wheels version. It is yet unknown whether Yamaha will seek to obtain homologation for the current R1 model, but this looks like a sensible move, aimed at providing a development base for teams with smaller budgets around the world.

FIM’s Superbike list updates include worthy rivals for the R1M, in the shape of the new Aprilia RSV4 1000 RR/RF, MV Agusta F4 RR, the new Ducati 1199 Panigale R, and the upgraded BMW S1000RR (+ABS, DTC, Electronic Gear Assist, DDC, forged wheels). A quick look on the list tells us that Ducati is only present with the 2013 model year 1199 Panigale R in the Superstock ranks, a possible indication on the Italian house’s focus on the top tier of the SBK series. The rest of the mentioned bikes are on the SSTK list.

Truth be told, the YZF-R1M looks like the top superbike of the year, sporting the most comprehensive upgrades and being literally a new generation machine. The same move is also expected from other manufacturers, as their machines, if we leave the yearly tinkering aside, are aging. Suzuki’s GSX-R1000 is probably one of the bikes which need a solid revamp the most.
