Thanks to the power of the world wide web, we’re expecting seven-year-olds to know what a 2JZ is these days. However, a deeper (read: 5-minute long) research will reveal that, in standard form, Toyota’s legendary powerplant isn't all that capable according to modern standards.
Nevertheless, the 2JZ is all about its tuning-friendly nature and there are two extremes when it comes to dipping into its potential. On the one hand, you can work on a tight budget. This will allow you to extract up to 400 hp out of the mill and perhaps become some sort of a local personality.
On the other hand, you can climb to the top of the ladder, where engineers are mixing JDM block and US internals genes, with the results being nothing short of spectacular.
The latest example of such an extreme incarnation sees the 3-liter in-line six being taken to 1,851 hp. This comes courtesy of the RS1600 upgrade, which has been delivered by Real Street Performance in collaboration with Manley Performance.
The video below allows us to take a peek at the RS 1600 kit’s development process. With the engine being tested on a dyno, the turbo soundtrack is one of the strongest we’ve heard all year.
The main ingredients of the RS 1600 kit are a Garrett GTX55 18R 88mm turbocharger, the upgraded internals required by this, as well as a host of other mods listed in the video. Nevertheless, the cylinder head remains in stock form.
To be more precise, the engine now delivers 1,851 HP and 1,080 lb-ft (that's 1,464 Nm for all you 2JZ fans across the pond), with the turbocharger working at 53.8 psi. Enough to allow you to challenge the meanest of the bad boys on airfield runways.
P.S.: While the aftermarket developers don’t mention the fuel used for this test, don’t expect it to be pump juice.
