Looking back though, I was quite miserable the year before traveling. I felt a bit trapped and I had a feeling of - is this it? This can’t be it”. He was working in an office everyday all the day for 26-year old Mike Hudson from Sheffield until about a year ago when he decided something needs to be done. He saved up $6,800, bought a 10-year old van, changed it into a proper home on wheels and has been traveling the world for the last 10 months.
People have been talking about having a choice, about being able to be free and do whatever is good for them, but how often don’t we all feel like there’s a lot more about the world we’re missing. So what if you don’t have the money you need now, maybe a good plan, a bit of luck and some madness will just be enough to actually make your dream finally come true.

Refitting a 10-year old van is not really that easy, since it took Mike four months to finish the job, but he managed to pack the vehicle with everything a person living on the road needs. He worked in an office during the day while learning to build websites and researching how to refit his van in his evenings. The result: a studio apartment on wheels complete with bedroom-lounge-diner, walk in shower room, 200-watt solar power system, fridge and gas cooker.

I was lucky everyone was really cool when I told them my plans to leave the UK and travel the world in my truck. I was nervous, scared, excited and relieved because I knew there was no going back. It’s a bit of a life experiment,” the adventurer explains. However, ever since last March, when he left his home town, he managed to take a ride on the famous Trasfagarasan pass in Romania, took part in Hungary’s SUN music festival and spotted brown bears in the forest.

Making friends on the way

He also met other fearless travelers like him, already visited France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and is currently enjoying the beautiful Greek island of Santorini. Mike claims that he survives on a daily budget of just ten-pounds ($15) by diesel sharing with hitchhikers, generating money from his online blog and juggling fire as a street performer. So far, Hudson spent more than 300 days and 10,000 miles (16,000 km) traveling.

According to his personal blog where Mike keeps updates on his new experiences, the converted camper van is quite impressive. Among its features we’ll only point out a couple: pressurized water system wit 70L fresh tank, 12V power distribution board with mains hook-up, shower and toilet, extendable bed for two, gas cooker and sink.

We put up a nice little photo gallery together so you guys can get a better grip of the camper, but feel free to ask the guy questions and to check out his stories.
