2015 Chevrolet Trax Tested: A New Crossover Hits the US

It seems like the crossovers are all the hype of the industry, showing great potential and the biggest growth in sales overall. Therefore, following the trend, it was only natural for Chevrolet to introduce the Trax on their home turf as well after releasing it back in 2013. We took if for a spin and came up with a full review of the US 2015 model.

Even though it is designed to slightly resemble a truck, the Trax is actually a compact SUV and it’s quite the conundrum as it offers big car looks in a small car package. Being thought out to be a practical car, the Chevy excels in this domain.

The low and wide boot makes it easy to pack up stuff and there’s plenty of room for all sorts of luggage, even with the seats up. With the rear seats folded, the Trax offers more space than a Nissan Juke and that’s one advantage people looking for a car in this segment will be looking for.

That doesn’t cut into the amount of room rear passengers have. There’s plenty of leg and head room and the various storage places are abundant. There’s one right in front of the passenger, two in the armrest in the back, two cupholders in between the front passengers, one atop the navigation screen and so on. In total, there are 19 of them.

All cars come with plenty of kit, including alloy wheels, air conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity and for that price margin, they very well might as the Trax isn’t exactly the cheapest of the bunch starting at around $21,000 in the US and €18,000 in Europe.

Don’t expect this to be a driver’s car though as the steering is very light, thought out for city dwellers. The engine range is also very limited, the US customers getting just the 1.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with FWD or AWD setups and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The rest of the world also has access to a diesel 1.7-liter engine and manual boxes.

The downsides include a lot of road noise and some heavy roll into corners. The ride is also quite bouncy at highway speeds while the interior quality isn’t all that great. It’s not all just black and white though and you can read more about it in our full 2015 Chevrolet Trax review.
