A few month after Volkswagen introduced the Polo facelift, its sister company Audi also unveiled the mid-life refresh for the A1 supermini, a car which has sold half a million units in 4 years.
There are a couple of major highlights of the engine range. A 1.4 TDI with 3 cylinders has been introduced, together with a 1-liter TFSI that will surely be compared on many occasions with the Ford 1-liter EcoBoost.

Audi offers the 1.0 TFSI engine as a standard unit now instead of the old 1.2 TFSI, while Volkswagen markets it as a more expensive fuel-sipper BlueMotion model. So, how fast is the basic A1 now?

The 3-cylinder turbo unit produces 95 hp and 160 Nm of torque (118 lb-ft). The video below shows how the model uses its S tronic 7-speed gearbox (yes, it's the DQ200 DSG) to get from 0 to 100 km/h in about 10 seconds and reach a top speed of 190 km/h (118 mph).

The car moves with about the same pace as the old 1.2 and doesn't sound all that bad, not even at 6,000rpm. Maybe Audi have done something to the soundproofing and added one of those fake exhaust notes though the speakers.

Belonging to the new EA211 engine family, the 1.0 TFSI has been designed as a replacement for less efficient 4-cylinder engines. It's been loosely based on the 1.0 MPI available on the Up!. A high output version has already been developed and it produces 110 hp plus 200 Nm of torque in some Polo models.

The engine has a combined fuel consumption of just 4.3 liters fuel per 100 kilometers (54.7 US mpg). Perhaps more crucial than that are the 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which make it relatively cheap to tax. It's worth a quick note that the 1.4 TDI is even more efficient at 3.4 liters fuel per 100 kilometers (69.2 US mpg, 89 g CO2 per km).
