With the overall distance of Dakar’s final timed stage shortened to 101 km (63 miles) due to the heavy rain, it was obvious that nothing could change dramatically in the way the podium positions looked like. Only few of the riders tried to push the limits, but the poor condition of the road meant there was more to lose than to win on the route from Rosario to Buenos Aires. The front runners of the general standings preferred to ride rather cautiously, letting others lead the stage.
Slovakian Jakes and Svitko have been clocked with the fastest times in this shortened Stage 13, while rookie Toby Price finished a solid third which would also help him retain his podium position overall. Marc Coma was 5th, letting Goncalves escape to some 1’15” ahead, while the top 10 was completed with Vogels, Verhoeven, Quintanilla, De Soultrat and Laia Sanz.

It’s finally over

When it comes to a race as tough as the Dakar Rally, one can be sure of his or her achievements only after the final checkered flag is waved. Indeed, the top 5 has not changed from the end of Stage 12, and only two riders swapped positions.

Marc Coma won his 5th Dakar, and is now level with Cyril Neveu and Cyril Despres. Since none of these are competing any longer (Despres was 34th with Peugeot), Marc Coma has real chances to level up and get on par with Stephane Peterhansel, who won 6 two-wheeled Dakars, in addition to the 5 four-wheeled ones. Paulo Goncalves had to settle for the runner-up position, as the penalty he received for changing the engine forfeited his chances to pass in front of Coma, and HRC preferred to secure a second place rather than risk everything.

Rookie Toby Price put Australia and KTM on the Dakar 2015 podium as he got the better of Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla, while Stefan Svitko was 5th. The top 10 also saw Ruber Faria, David Casteu, Ivan Jakes, Laia Sanz and Olivier Pain. With Jakes’ better time in the final stage, he switched places with Laia Sanz in the final standings. However, Sanz has added to her name the best Dakar finish a woman ever got and this most likely equals a victory, or something like that.

2015 brings one more Dakar victory for KTM, and extends the rather authoritative domination of the Mattighofen machinery in this sport. The Austrian manufacturer has no less than seven bikes in top ten, Honda with only 2 and Yamaha one. In the Marathon class, which does not allow the replacement of important plast including the engine, the 2015 Dakar was won by Romanian rider Emanuel Gyenes, on a KTM. He was 21st overall.

Anyone placing bets on seeing Toby Price as the wingman of Marc Coma in 2016?
