When yuppie was coined in the 1980s, most men were wearing hideous suspenders and horrendous suits embellished with shoulder pads. In this day and age, the acronym for young urban professional is not in fashion anymore and men dress significantly better, but Fiat just pulled a yuppie mobile on us.
As if the standard 2015 Fiat 500X didn’t scream enough “I’m the Renegade’s pompous cousin,” the Italian automaker took things to the yuppie extreme with the Black Tie design study. When we first approached this B-segment crossover vehicle at Geneva, we have sighed collectively.
What’s with the tacky stripes, man? Mr. Lapo Elkann, grandson of Fiat scion Gianni Agnelii and the brother of FCA chairman John Elkann, may have had something to do with the stripes that adorn the exterior of this concept, but am I the only one that thinks two things: wrapping paper and a 1980s blazer with silver piping?
For crying out loud, this Fiat screams “Look at me, look how fancy I am, mhm!” The solid wood roof rails and door handles aren’t helping either. But the visual horror is taken to new lengths by the way Fiat embellished the cabin. The door panels, pillar linings and roof are all wrapped in black denim. Then there’s the Alcantara floor mats, because rubber floor mats aren’t easily washable, apparently. But there’s more...
Denim and British cashmere beautify the steering wheel, seats and gear lever. When I say beautify, I actually meant "lay waste to anything remotely acceptable visual-wise for a vehicle’s interior". As if that isn't kitschy enough to nullify the 2015 Fiat 500X Black Tie concept’s point of existence, maybe the odious inner door moldings made of solid wood can be accounted as the last straw to break the camel’s back.
