When one sets out to buy a car he or she has a couple of items on the list that have to be fulfilled in order to declare one’s self as satisfied. With the fresh facelift that Honda gave the Civic Si Coupe in the US, they wanted to improve on a couple of essential points.
Don’t think that the engine was changed however, as it very much stayed the same. Sure, there are 4 extra HP now available and 4 extra lb-ft of twist but overall, the difference is not felt in this department because the car also gained a few pounds.
The reason for that increased weight might be due to the new design or due to the added elements around the suspension and chassis tuning but one thing’s for sure, both have changed. The handling was improved by a small matter and the design was brought more into the 21st century.
The updated Civic Si Coupe received a sportier suspension tuning bringing higher rate springs, new dampers and a stiffer rear stabilizer bar. In tight corners, when you push the car to the limit, you’ll feel the extra stiffness but that’s about the only time you’re glad about it. Take the side roads and you’ll immediately see what we mean.
The 6-speed manual deserves a special mention, however, as it is a rarity these days. It’s also the reason why this car is enjoyable, offering short, precise throws, a perfectly weighted clutch and a pretty good shifter.
What impressed us the most was the balance in everything we felt. Sure, the front/rear weight ratio might not be as good as you expected with at 61/39 but that’s not all that matters here. The fuel consumption and the price tag make this car a worthy mention on everyone’s list when looking for a new ride and that's what truly offers it perfect balance.
