We’ve always said a Jeep should be unapologetic while also taking good care of its owner. Well, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee we recently reviewed follows this recipe closely and we applaud it for that. The FCA-umbrella built Cherokee feels spot on.
Obviously, it all starts with the unapologetic part, namely the styling of the car. We are referring to the front end design here, which has shocked many people, both inside and outside the Jeep community.
We’ve always enjoyed cars which crossed the styling line, so there’s no reason to make an exception now. Especially since the appearance of the Cherokee is an excellent mix between its streamlined upper side and its rugged lower part.
The traditional Jeep elements, such as the grille and the boxy wheel arches are here, blending with the raked windshield, for example.
Entering the car, we once again find a melange - for instance, the Willis reference represented by the rev counter’s red zone meets the nice display between the dashboard instruments.
Still, there are certain parts of the interior that disappoint in terms of fit and finish, with the gear shifter being the best example here.
Our tester was gifted with a complete technology package. Inside the city, this ended up transforming the car altogether. From blind spot monitoring to a parking sensor system that can stop the car on its own, these goodies are well implemented.
Then again, they build on a base that’s just right. The new-age Cherokee shares its platform with the Dodge Dart, for instance, which means it feels entirely car-like.
And while this offers you the required mobility on city roads, you really come to appreciate this. Even when we took things too far, the car was obedient. As for the comfort, the Cherokee offers enough of it to cater to your long-trip needs.
Ironically, the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which always knows how to keep the engine in the right gear, can also be a bit of Achille’s Heel at times. The automatic comes from ZF, but it is still far from the smoothness of their 8-speed box.
But we’ll go through the details, as well as talk about why this is the most offload-capable car in its segment, in our 2015 Jeep Cherokee review.
