When autoevolution tested the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, we were utterly impressed by the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 under the hood and that “through the bends, it's very easy to forget you are behind the wheel of an SUV.” With the 2015 model, Jeep made some adjustments to the vee-8 lump, increasing the output just a little bit, to 475 HP and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm).
Speaking of performance-oriented SUVs, the Grand Cherokee SRT is one of the last of the naturally aspirated breed, a detail that makes it even more desirable. But in this so-called Red Vapor special edition package, the SRT looks more enticing than ever before. It’s not majestic, nor imposing, it’s just cool like that and that V8 HEMI lump is the soundtrack of Detroit Motor City.
In the US, the Red Vapor package is priced $3,995 over the base price of a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Fortunately for Brits with a passion for American muscle, the package will go on sale in the Albion this week, holding a sticker of £64,999 (OTR). The 440 HP Porsche Cayenne GTS is around £7,500 more than the American bruiser, so there you have it - good value for money.
Available in the pictured Metallic Red (Redline) hue or in Bright White and Brilliant Black, the Red Vapor package comes packed with aesthetic and luxurious goodies. Mind you, the UK-spec is a little bit different from the US-spec model. I’m not referring to the right-hand drive conversion, but the output. While the US-spec is coming with 354 kW (475 HP), the UK-spec SRT makes do with 344 kW (461 HP). The UK-spec 2015 Ford Mustang GT also suffers from a similar horsepower handicap (412 HP versus 435 HP).
Nevertheless, this detail doesn’t bother us nor Damien Dally, the Jeep UK brand head. Damien declared that the 2015 Jeep “Grand Cherokee SRT Red Vapor is very attractively priced. With its sporting look, powerful performance and excellent value for money, this limited edition of SRT will, I am sure, appeal to a whole new group of discerning customers.” Truth be told, you’d have to be a little weird to go for a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT over a Porsche Cayenne GTS, but c’mon, it’s so friggin’ cool!
