2015 Mazda2 1.3 Skyactiv-G Unveiled in Bangkok

The new Mazda2 has already been launched in Europe with 3 versions of 1.5-liter petrol engine, producing 75, 90 and 115 hp, respectively. However, a new model with a much smaller engine has been introduced at the Bangkok International Auto Show today. Powered by a 1.3-liter petrol engine, it has decent power and better fuel economy, being available as both sedan and hatchback.

The 2015 Mazda2 1.3 Skyactiv-G produces 93 PS at 5,800 rpm and 123 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. While the hp number is slightly higher than the average 1.5-liter, the torque is about 20% less.

Built on a whole new chassis that isn't shared with a Ford Fiesta any more, the Mazda2 is assembled at the Hofu factory in Japan and at Rayong, Thailand, which is currently the only place making the sedan version. However, it will also be put together in Salamanca, Mexico for the North American market and re-badged as the Scion iA.

From Thailand, the new Mazda2 1.3 could be imported to other markets and that's why we were so interested to see what it offers. Remember, the old Mazda2 was available with a 1.3 too. Standard kit includes manual air-con, keyless start, i-stop, a satin gear lever surround and a radio with buttons where you’d find the MZD Connect screen normally.

Interestingly, all models, even the basic ones, seem to be fitted with a six-speed automatic. It has a sport mode which is engaged by pushing a toggle switch, as you can see in the video below.

At 23.3 km/l (4.3 l/100km or 66 mpg UK), the Mazda2 1.3 is decently efficient, though it can't match the 1.5-liter diesel models.
