It’s not easy to create an extremely powerful, fast and agile crossover but if someone was going to take a stab at it, we’re glad it was Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division. Their creation is called the GLA45 AMG and we just put it to the test. It wasn’t an easy test to do either as there may be a couple of things about this car you didn’t expect (and neither did we).

From the outside, you can immediately tell that this is an all-out AMG model. Compared to the stock model, the GLA45 has a lower center of gravity thanks to the improved suspension. It’s actually 4 inches shorter in this regard. On top of that, it has a big roof spoiler up top, made of carbon fiber, as well as other aerodynamic touches here and there.

Inside the cabin you get to revel in the stock AMG seats that look magnificent but can be upgraded to the Performance version. That brings out some Recaro bottom holders that are going to keep you in check most of the time, but will force you to take a brake every once in a while. They are extremely harsh on your back.

Under the bonnet hides the true jewel of this car. It’s the most potent 2-liter engine in the world for specific power, making 360 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque thanks to the ‘miracle’ of forced induction. Furthermore, as this plaque says, the units are hand made by AMG’s engineers in their Affalterbach plant.

The hardcore version and the standard one feel completely different on the road. While the latter is more focused on comfort, the former is really aiming at providing the kicks you expect when buying an AMG car. That also translates into compromises done here and there. The GLA45 AMG won’t be doing much off road due to its lowered ground clearance and it will also shatter kidneys in the process.

Even so, on twisty roads you get to see the GLA45 AMG in action, offering you a fun and playful drive all the way. The steering is perfectly balanced for both normal and sporty driving while the brakes are extremely grabby, keeping you on your toes and the weight of the car in check.
