2015 Nissan X-Trail Hybrid Launched in Japan

What’s known as the 2015 Nissan Rogue in the States is dubbed the X-Trail pretty much anywhere else in the world. In its country of origin, the mid-size crossover SUV recently received the run-of-the-mill hybrid treatment.

While the US gets a 2.5-liter gas-fed engine and Europe is mad for the Renault-sourced 1.6 dCi turbo diesel, the JDM-spec X-Trail Hybrid does its eco-friendly business with different oily bits.

Starting with a 2-liter MR20DD four-pot petrol lump, the hybridization continues with a little electric motor. If numbers is what you’re after, we’re talking about 147 PS (145 HP) and 207 Nm (153 lb-ft) plus 30 kW (40 HP) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque. Not a bad proposition, huh?

With prices starting from 2,804,760 yen (roughly $23,420 at current exchange rates), the Hybrid is about 400 bucks more than the base US-spec 2015 Nissan Rogue. In terms of cog-swapping, this duty is handled by an XTronic CVT gearbox with D-Step Shift logic, a feature that makes the unit mimic a typical torque-converter automatic.

Thanks to a lithium-ion battery pack and all the green gizmos featured in the powertrain, all is wonderful in terms of economy. Then again, it seems like Nissan is making a big case over its Intelligent Dual Clutch Control hybrid system, which delivers electric and internal combustion motor energy mechanically to the transmission without any extra assistance whatsoever.

Last but not least, we’re informed that the 2015 Nissan X-Trail Hybrid is meeting Japan’s 2020 fuel economy standards. Actual fuel economy in numbers? That’ll be an impressive 4.8 liters/100 km, which translates to 49 UK mpg or 48.5 US mpg.
