The second body style in the Fabia family benefits from a significant redesign and reengineering job. It now boasts a larger cabin and a significant specification boost over the outgoing model, thanks to the latest turbocharged engines.

The highlight of the Fabia Estate is the 530-liter boot, the biggest in this segment. Skoda offers the new Fabia in three trim grades: S, SE and SE-L, with prices starting at £12,460.

As standard, the Fabia Estate comes with six airbags, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, Stop/Start and electric front windows. However, the cheapest model is equipped with a 1-liter MPI engine making 75 horsepower, which we'd avoid, especially if you plan on doing any motorway miles.

Instead, you might want to go for one of the 1.2 TSI engines. If you want power and comfort, the 1.2 TSI 110PS DSG can be yours from £14,684. But if the DSG auto isn't your thing, you can order a 90 horsepower manual in the SE trim level for £14,480. That gets you three-spoke leather steering wheel, height adjustable driver and passenger seat, Maxi-DOT trip computer and black roof rails.

Even Skoda admits that "the 1.2 TSI 90PS engine is expected to be the most popular with UK buyers." That means they should have a good big stockpile of units that can be delivered much faster.

A diesel might also be a good idea, since Skoda just launched some new 1.4-liter TDI units. They're 3-cylinder ones, but don't think they're going to be as underpowered and terrible as the old 1.2 TDI. Even the base model has 90 PS and a 105 PS version is available on the very top trim level.

The diesels are more economical than their petrol cousins but cost more to buy in the first place. For instance, an SE 1.4 diesel with a manual is £16,535, exactly £2,000 more than the 1.2 TSI with the exact same power output.

Right now, the Fabia Estate configurator isn't online, so your best bet for figuring which version you can afford is the press release below.
