With the 3rd generation model, Skoda has cut all ties between the Fabia and the hot hatch market. The most powerful engine you can order right now is a 110 hp 1.2-liter, hardly the stuff of legend. However, this has fried up resources for the more practical model that people actually expect to be able to buy from the Czechs, like the Fabia Scout Combi.
This used to be offered on the previous generation model and sources within the company have said the rugged van is due to make a comeback sooner rather than later.
So why is this weird looking vehicle important? Because it ticks all the right boxes with family car buyers and does so at a more affordable price than any SUV.
Built around an updated version of the old PQ25 platform, the new Fabia Combi is lighter but also larger than its predecessor. The non-Scout model has already gone on sale across most of Western and Central Europe, showing that through the use of superior engine technology, fuel consumption can be cut significantly without loss in performance.
The Fabia Combi Scout should launch within a year, adding even more practicality to the mix. As these renderings created by X-Tomi Design show, it will have increased body protection from rocks and other debris thanks to plastic add-ons. The ground clearance will also be increase and underbody protection will be added at the front and the rear.
But the biggest improvement will be made in the way it drives. On the road, the much wider body will ensure handling is superior to the previous generation. The engines available should all be turbocharged, including two versions of the 1.2 TSI and two of the new 1.4 TDI 3-cylinder diesel. On gravel and other forms of loose road, the Scout Combi will work just like a small crossover. The brakes will play a huge roll, stopping one wheel when slip is detected and offering a different ESP setup that's ideal for slippery conditions.
