Skoda is a much bigger car company than it used to be only a decade ago. Their global sales stand at about 1 million units per year and the model lineup will soon grow to include a small Fabia-based crossover called the Polar and a large 7-seater SUV.
What they don't have enough of is that rally stage lunacy that made them famous. Tapping into the brands's hidden potential, the Octavia RS 230 was unveiled today ahead of its debut in Geneva two weeks from now. As the name suggests, more power has been extracted from the 2-liter turbo engine, but upgrades have also been made in drivetrain.
Like the Golf GTI with the Performance Pack, the Octavia RS 230 makes 230 PS from its 2.0 TSI engine. That's not mind-boggling power, especially when the Leon Cupra ST makes 280 PS. But what's different is the electronically controlled differential front axle lock has been added, installed for dynamic cornering and borrowed from the GTI's Performance Pack.
This is the first time a production Skoda model has been equipped with an LSD and it also happens the RS 230 is the fastest Czech car ever, getting from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, while the top speed stands at 250 km/h (155 mph).
The Skoda Octavia RS 230 special edition will receive its public debut at the beginning of next month during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and will hit dealerships in June. We expect both sedan and wagon bodies to be available at prices that are about €2,000 higher than normal.
