Volkswagen's South American division has just unveiled the new Fox Pepper, a production-ready concept car based on the all-new Fox hatchback that will make its official debut at the end of the month during the Sao Paulo Auto Show. The Pepper is basically a crossover body kit, like the one on Alltrack models sold in Europe.
Before we go into the details, let's establish what the Fox is so you have a better understanding of this concept's size. It used to be offered in the UK and a few other European markets before VW replaced it with the Up! city car in 2011. It's built in Brazil, based on an older Polo platform and offered as a 3- and 5-door model. For the 2015 model year, a new model has been launched, one that borrows design cues from the Golf 7, which is viewed as a premium car there.
The design of the Fox Pepper is a mix between an Alltrack and a GTI. Yes, there are protective body cladding elements on the bumpers and wheel arches, but they are joined by sport touches like the exhaust or the red GTI stripe in the grille. It also packs some pretty serious tint on the windows and taillights and a contrasting gloss black roof.
As for the overall color, it's called Red Tornado, which is either a comicbook reference or the same tone used by just about every Golf GTI, GTD, R or Beetle built in the last decade.
The Pepper concept can be put into production by next year, but only if Volkswagen gets a positive response from the motor show crowd.
The Fox Pepper is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 189 km/h (117 mph). If conventional gasoline is used, this drops to 10.3 seconds and a speed of 183 km/h (113 mph).
What's our say in all this? The Fox Pepper is a strange to our tastebuds as salty ice cream. However, maybe there's a boy racer somewhere in Brazil who has to deal with bad roads every day.

Impressive engine tech… for Brazil
Under the bonnet of the Fox Pepper is the 1.6-liter MSI engine from the EA211 family. It has four valves per cylinder and will produce 120 horsepower when running on ethanol. Technologies fitted include an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, aluminum block and head, variable valve timing and a split cooling system. The Fox Pepper is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds and a top speed of 189 km/h (117 mph).
