It’s been quite some time since the fans of Yamaha’s flagship sports machine have been waiting for a new generation of their beloved R1. The EICMA 2014 brings an all-new YZF-R1 but also an even better version, dubbed R1M, which promise to carry on the legend that started back in 1988.
The house of Iwata decided to stop fooling around with minor changes and went the extra mile for a serious overhaul of the R1. The result is as astonishing as it is capable of delivering soaring performance and quite a thrilling ride on both street and track.
The bike has what Yamaha calls Inertial Measurement Unit that uses gyros to measure the G-Forces felt by the chassis and the talk to the ECU to bring you things like various power delivery modes, lean angle sensitive power control, 4-stage slide control, 4-stage lift control to dial in your maximum wheelie settings, full-throttle launch control and other features.
Traction control is also offered as part of the deal, and this means we are definitely going to see this included in more motorcycles in the future. Yamaha’s sport-touring and generic “sport” bikes could also be on the list.
There's also a new TFT screen in front of you that looks brilliant as well. Set to begin arriving in dealerships in February, the new R1 will have a starting price of $16,450 in the States.
Compared to the R1, the R1M has the same specs but brings a special package altogether as well. Carbon fiber was used extensively and is the prefered material out of which the fairing was made. Therefore, we took 104 photos of the two to show you everything. Furthermore, the design is much more aggressive than before, with the same concept of dual headlights being kept on but this time, they were lowered a lot more towards the front wheel.
For EICMA, Yamaha decided to bring out their new engine as well, showcasing it for the whole world to see.
An interesting detail is that on the new R1 models, the air intake was taken straight off the M1 bike that Valentino Rossi drives. It's looking beautiful, not to mention that it's also a lot more efficient. We included a couple of shots of Rossi's Bike as well in the photo gallery. On top of that, it gets electronically adjustable suspension from Ohlins that works in conjuction with the IMU to offer the best traction possible.
It's also interesting to note that the R1 and R1M come with passenger seats but... honestly.... judidging by how small they look, sitting in the back is not something we'd recommend as you could very easily end up in a ditch.
Pricing for the R1M starts at $21,990 in the US.
Electronic supensions jump in the game but only as an optional feature on the R1
It’s really nice to see that the new R1 models arrive with electronically-adjustable suspensions, even though they are optional. This means far quicker setups when switching from street to track, as the desired suspension response is now only a button click away. Even more, this allows the customers to enjoy riding the bike in optimal conditions even when the roads are less than perfect. Choosing a smoother suspension with more progressive damping yet maintaining a decent rebound is now possible.
Coupling this with the riding modes and power settings will definitely make the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1 a much more versatile, more compliant bike which will be even more fun to ride in casual way on a daily basis.
Shifting assistance makes everything smooth and allows for improved performance when riding hard on the track. Since this bike serves as the basis for SBK homologation, it’s only natural to see Yamaha loading it with all the sport-focused prerequisites.
With the red line around 14,000 rpm and the bike filmed on the track doing 262 km/h (163 mph) even before reaching the 12,000 rpm bar, it’s easy to figure out that we’re looking at a bike which can do so much more in stock trim.
