2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 First Official Pictures Show a Future Winner

The 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 is finally here, and we’ve got almost all the details about this ultra-hot appearance in the small-displacement segment. As expected, the R3 is a step up from the R25 machine Valentin Rossi introduced. The bike looks similar to is smaller sister, but the figures will allow it to do battle with the rest of the machines in the expanding class.

R3 arrives with a parallel twin 321cc DOHC liquid-cooled engine which can produce 42 hp when revved at 10,750 rpm. The peak torque of 29.6 Nm (21.8 lb-ft) is reached at 9,000 revs, and the 6-speed manual transmission uses a wet multi-disc clutch for effortless shifting. The 60x44.1mm (2.7x1.7”) cylinders are fed through an EFI system, while the final transmission uses a chain.

The bike rolls on 41mm telescopic forks with 130mm (5.1”) travel, while the rear monoshock travels only 125mm (5”). Brakes use a 298mm rotor in the front and a220mm one in the rear. The tech sheet doesn’t say anything on ABS, but the European model will definitely have anti-locking brakes.

Street and track worthiness, giving Honda and Kawasaki a run for their money

The photos show the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 on the race track, and it’s obvious that Iwata has put in a lot of efforts to endow this bike with all the needed grunt to smash the competition. So far the bike’s displacement and power figure are sure ways to steal a lot of the CBR300R and Ninja300 customers.

On the weight side, the Ninja 300 is a 171 kg (379 lb) machine, dry, while the curb weight of the CBR300R is 162 kg (357 lb). The wet R3 weight is 169 kg (373 lb), but the superior power seems to be the cutting edge and get this bike closer to a rivalry with the KTM 390 Duke. No price was offered so far, but things will clear up these days. Enjoy the neat gallery after the jump.

We’ve waited almost two years for Yamaha to step into the new small-displacement foray, but the wait was totally worth it. If the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3 will be offered with the same killer prices like the rest of the new bikes, we’re already looking at a best-seller, especially as it is A2-compliant in Europe.
