Remember that all-new 3.6-litter V6 engine Cadillac developed for the CT6 flagship sedan? Well, it’s back to haunt us in the 2016 model year versions of the ATS compact and CTS mid-size sedan. In both cases, the latest fuel-saving features are incorporated, including Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and stop/start technology to enhance fuel economy up to an estimated 9 percent when compared to the previous V6.
Cadillac could still be considered to be behind the segment leaders. Their all-new tech is similar to what the Germans have offered for an entire model generation. Even if you look at Japanese models, Lexus has offered similar fuel-sipping tech for a while.

However, both the CTS and ATS are sexy cars, and there’s nothing wrong with a simple V6 if it gets you to where you want to go. In case you are wonderng Output is SAE-certified at 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 284 lb-ft of torque (385 Nm).

Additional engine highlights include:

• Stronger, stiffer aluminum block with increased structure in the bulkheads for superior rigidity
• Tough, refined rotating assembly with a stiff forged-steel crankshaft, friction-reducing polymer-coated pistons and strong high-copper-content, sinter-forged connecting rods
• New four-cam phasing system with intermediate park technology that enhances efficiency by enabling late inlet valve closing in certain conditions
• All-new, patented “targeted” cooling system that provides strategic cooling of the engine’s hottest areas while simultaneously fostering faster warm-up to enhance efficiency
• New, higher-flow cylinder heads that enhance direct injection performance and feature integrated exhaust manifolds
• Revised, simplified timing drive system with cushioned chain sprockets contributing to quieter engine operation
• All-new lubrication system with a variable-displacement, two-stage oil pump that enhances efficiency. It is located inside the oil pan, which contributes to greater noise abatement

Expected to hit dealerships soon, the upgraded models also feature an updated infotainment system that is three times faster than its predecessor. The models also receive Apple CarPlay compatibility, WiFi connectivity, and OnStar 4G LTE.

Both sedans will also hit dealerships with an upgraded 2-liter turbo engine, also equipped with start/stop technology. Their new eight-speed automatic transmission is promised to be more responsive and fuel efficient.

“While these new systems increase efficiency, a main focus in engineering at Cadillac is to integrate these systems smoothly with no compromise to the driving experience,” says David Leone, Cadillac executive chief engineer. “Our new 8-speed transmission was developed internally for fast and smooth shifting in every situation with Cylinder Deactivation and Start/Stop are integrated in a more seamless manner than our competitors.”
