Chevrolet has replaced quite a bit of the Volt’s styling in the transition from the first generation to the second. Some say it’s boring, others than it’s a brilliant nod to the Corvette’s styling. We’re pretty sure the designers did their homework and it will be an even bigger sales success than the outgoing model.
Without further ado, we bring you the first rendering based on the 2016 Volt, created by X-Tomi Design in the attempt of making a futuristic blue coupe. He definitely succeeded in making something nice here, something worth building.
Remember, the coupe is not synonymous with “sportscar”. Its name is French for ‘cut’, which usually happens in the roof. We think there would definitely be a market for an entry-level Volt with 2 doors and a svelte body, a sort of Cadillac ELR on a tight budget.
It would be good for Cadillac’s corporate image. Many Prius models are forced into fleet services and delivery services. You couldn’t do that with a coupe. Cadillac tried to make a similar car in the form of the ELR, but failed because they charged way too much. The 2014 ELR retails from $75,000 to $82,136 and they barely moved a few hundred because of that.
If the styling doesn’t get you excited, maybe the tech will. The second-gen GM Voltec propulsion system gets an 18.4 kWh battery with 192 cells instead of 288, which was co-developed with LG Chem. As for the range extender, the old one was swapped for an all-aluminum 1.5-liter four-cylinder that churns out 101 hp.
As for speed, this is hardly a sportscar, offering a top one of 98 mph (157 km/h). The 2016 Volt is able to make short trips of up to 50 miles (80 km) without ever using the range extender, but once the battery runs dry, a full tank of gas will give you another 420 miles (676 km) of driving. Acceleration? It will do 0 to 30 mph (48 km/h) in 2.6 seconds and 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in a mere 8.4 seconds, about the same as any compact.
