The second-generation Chevrolet Volt is now available to order at US-bound dealerships. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt builds upon its predecessor’s success, pushing the plug-in hybrid envelope further in the eco-friendly segment of the market. So what’s there to know?
Underpinned by the brand new GM D2UX/D2XX platform, the 2016 Volt is better in every aspect. Compared to the 2015 model year, the new kid on the block uses new oily bits. A 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 101 horsepower joins a two-motor Electric Drive unit with 149 horsepower and 294 lb-ft (398 Nm).
With an all-electric range of 50 miles (80 km) and a gas-only fuel economy of 41 mpg (5.7 l/100 km), the all-new Volt is a rather frugal machine. Deliveries start late this summer, with the 2016 Chevy Volt holding a sticker price of $33,170 (plus $825 delivery & destination). Apply federal and state incentives and that MSRP goes down to $26,495 (federal tax credit is $7,500) or a staggering $24,995 for California residents.
On the customizing front, customers are offered a choice of 7 exterior colors and 5 interior upholstery combinations. Inside, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt gains an 8-inch MyLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay compatibility.
If you’re an Android user, only later in the 2016 model year the Volt will receiver Android Auto compatibility. 4G LTE comes as standard courtesy of OnStar. Instead of good old analogue gauges, the instrument cluster is an 8-inch diagonal display with four reconfigurable themes.
