BMW’s F48 X1 is currently in its final stages of testing. Proof to that stands the fact that our spy photographers managed to catch the car without camouflage on its interior. That being said, what we’re looking at here is how the new crossover will look like, from the inside.
As you can see, the similarities between it and the front-wheel drive 2 Series Active Tourer are not limited to the technical details. Basically, the inside of the X1 looks a lot like the 2er and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Sure, everyone wants a different interior on every car but that raises costs and, if BMW was to offer that on its models, the difference would end up being paid by the customer in the final price. Therefore, some adjustments have to be made.

The steering wheel, instrument cluster, HVAC controls and air vents are exactly the same as on the Active Tourer. What we can notice though is that there seems to be more room inside than before, one of the advantages of going front-wheel drive.

The X1 will be using UKL underpinnings

The UKL platform BMW has been working on is now going to be used at full capacity. Apart from the new MINI models and the 2 Series Active Tourer, it will also be used on a number of future German machines.

Amongst them the upcoming F48 X1 that will be migrating to FWD from its RWD setup. Along with it will come the new B-family of engines that will range from 1.5-liter 3-cylinder ones to 3-liter 6-cylinder versions. The latter are not expected to show up on the crossover however.

Space inside should be improved due to the different architecture and it sure seems so from the spyshots we’re bringing you today.

Exterior styling

The photos our team of car paparazzi sent us today seem to be the most revealing yet. We can now distinguish the overall shape of the headlights that seem to be a smaller scale versions of the ones found on the X5. The same corona rings are noticeable, as we expected.

Bigger kidney grilles await right between the headlamps and there are two air intakes at the sides of the front bumper while the bonnet is now showing a cut line right above them. By the looks of things, this prototype seems to be sporting a panoramic roof as well.

An interesting thing to point out is that there seem to be two tailpipes at the back which would indicate the presence of a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine but that’s a far stretch, as we already told you. Our guess is that this is the top of the line model, fitted with a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine making around 230 HP. Expect the new X1 to be presented in production guise next autumn at Frankfurt.
