Breaking news: BMW’s upcoming X1 model was caught completely undisguised in China. Admittedly, the photos are of incredibly bad quality but now we have a hint of how the new crossover will look like.
Built on the new UKL platform, the F48 X1 is supposed to be launched later this year and will be going front-wheel drive. The guys from Chinese website AutoHome somehow managed to snap a couple of shots of a prototype present in China, completely undressed.

What we’re looking at is an evolution of the current model, one that stays within the company’s style but also brings fresh ideas to its face. Noticeable are the bigger kidney grilles, the new headlights that kid-of resemble the one found on the original X3 and the new air intakes on the sides.

That’s on the front fascia. The rear end also shows new taillights in tune with today’s direction of styling in Munich, featuring L-shaped LED-illuminated strips similar to those found on cars like the X5 and X6.

Two tailpipes at the back and a silver diffuser complete the package along with a badge on the front door saying ‘xDrive25Li’. That means we’re going to see a long wheelbase model being manufactured and sold in China alone most likely or that the rumored 7-seat model will wear the 'Li' lettering on its boot.

That model will also get the new B48 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine that’s also found in two variants on the 2 Series Active Tourer and Mk 3 MINI Cooper JCW Hardtop. It makes 231 HP and between 320 and 350 Nm (236 - 258 lb-ft) of torque.

The US market will only get xDrive models, FWD ones being restricted to other select markets around the world. As for the car’s world debut, expect to see the concept at Geneva and the production model unveiled either at Shanghai in April or Frankfurt in September.
