In continuous production since 2000, the Ford F-650/F-750 Super Duty are the Blue Oval’s offerings in the medium-duty commercial truck segment. Replacing the 1980s F-600, F-700 an F-800, the new model family of utility trucks were manufactured in Mexico until 2013 in a joint venture with Navistar International, but production was recently shifted to Ohio, to make them that bit more American.
Available in the US, Canada, Mexico and Brazil, these medium-duty and heavy-duty workhorses are classified as Class 6 (19,501 – 26,000 lbs), 7 (26,001 – 33,000 lbs) and 8 (above 33,000 lbs) trucks. The second generation of the F-650/F-750 was presented early last year at the National Truck Equipment Association Work Truck Show, when we were told that the updated lineup will be available in spring 2015.
However, that’s no longer the case now. After heading over to the Ford Motor Company’s website, we found a fine print that reads “available summer 2015 and assembled in the US with domestic and foreign parts.” That three-month delay is every bit as mysterious to us as it is to you. Fret not though - it seems like everything else regarding the 2016 Ford F-650/F-750 Super Duty truck family goes according to plan.
As such, Ford will remain the segment-exclusive company to offer a gasoline-powered engine for a medium-duty truck in the guise of the 362 horsepower and 457 lb-ft 6.8-liter V10, which can be kitted to run on compressed natural gas or liquid propane gas. A second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel will also be offered, in the following formats: 270 HP and 675 lb-ft, 300 HP and 700 lb-ft, 330 HP and 725 lb-ft.
To be offered in Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab body styles, as well as in straight frame, dock height and a dedicated model for heavy towing applications (the Class 7 F-750 tractor rig), the 2016 F-650/F-750 Super Duty boasts with a 6-speed TorqShift HD auto and a 5-year/250,000-mile powertrain warranty.
