The most-loved mid-size crossover SUV from Korea just got an all-new generation for the 2016 model year. Naturally, there are some notable differences between the Euro-spec model and the US-bound Sorento, so let’s run through what the third generation of the nameplate boasts with in the US.
It’s anybody’s guess the turbo diesels people are so mad about in Europe were all dropped for the US market. In their place, Kia Motors America is offering a choice of three gasoline-fed powerplants.
These are 2.4-liter four-cylinder mill with 185 hp and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm), a 2-liter turbo with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm), as well as a 3.3L V6 with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft (341 Nm) of torque. All of them are coupled to a six-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive capability offered as an optional extra.
Compared to the European Kia Sorento, the US-spec model adds ice cube fog lights and los of chrome
No really, there's chrome at the front, sides, rear and on the wheels of the SXL trim level as well. Still, despite the too much polished chrome, everything looks pretty fine to our eyes. Even the cabin design is way more inviting than before. Assembled Stateside, the 2016 Sorento is available in five trim levels.
If you’re in the market for such a family-hauler with seating for seven, we recommend to stay away from the entry-level the L and LX. Instead go for the EX, SX or the white SXL in the photo gallery below. That’s because I’m sure nobody wants to spend the better part of $24,000 on a crossover SUV full of faux wood trim and cheap plastic, a simple air con system and a small 4.3-inch multimedia screen.
Just spend a dribble of dough more and treat yourself to Nappa leather heated seats front and rear, an 8-inch UVO infotainment system, a sunroof and a 12-speaker Infinity stereo. The dollars you’ll be spending on these things will make the 2016 Kia Sorento a much better partner on the long run.
