Lexus presented the refreshed ES sedan in Shanghai, and we are here to show you live pictures of America's most-loved near-luxury car.
When your range has a popular model in terms of sales, there's no point in completely changing the paradigm and come up with a different formula, since the original one was working wonders.
Improving what is already functional and profitable is, however, something to be done and Lexus did not waste any time here. The updated 2016 Lexus ES stepped on the Chinese automotive catwalk, and here's what's new about it. Just as the teaser photo suggested, the design job applied to the ES is a rather minor one.
For example, the spindle grill was slightly refreshed and the headlights were gifted black graphics guarded by Lexus' signature LED daytime running lights. Designers also came up with two new rim patterns and Lexus has four additional paint options for customers interested in fancy names and shades: Amber, Nightfall Mica, Caviar, and Eminent White Pearl.
Inside, there's a new "sporty" steering wheel for "better driving engagement" and a larger 4.2-inch color display plus additional "Enter" buttons on either side of the interface controller.
The novelty in terms of under-the-hood magic is a 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine, develped to meet China's fuel economy regulations. It will be offered in China, Taiwan and Russia, while the US will get the existing 3.5-liter V6 engine and a gasoline-electric hybrid powerplant. However, Lexus didn't mention the engine's power output, maximum torque or fuel consumption figures.
Lexus says it applied structural reinforcements to improve stifness of the updated ES, but also came up with a sound-reducing layer placed behind the dashboard, which they say will better isolate the cabin from noise coming from the engine bay.
