The rumor mill is up and running again regarding how powerful the new Mazda MX-5 Miata will be when it’s going to hit dealerships. The 2-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder that will be fit under the car’s hood is now supposed to make less horsepower than the outgoing model.
We know the 2016 Mazda MX-5 will get a 2-liter Skyactiv engine, probably the same unit you get on the Mazda3 but with more power. Still, don’t expect it to be a beast though, as Autoblog claims they saw Chicago Auto Show’s webpage accidentally leaking an output of 155 hp. That’s less than what the actual MX-5 offers, to be precise.

After visiting the aforementioned page, it seems they’ve removed the number, indicating that it could be an accidental information leak and they have addressed the issue.

Still, the page reads “the heart of the new MX-5 is a new generation Skyactiv 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine” which could mean it’s not exactly the unit sourced from the 3 model.

The current, or should I say outgoing, Miata can be had with a 2-liter four-cylinder pushing 160 hp (167 hp in the US) out the back. So the difference isn’t that much in case it comes with a 155 hp plant. And don’t forget the new Miata is actually 220 lb (100 kg) lighter than the current generation.

So, there’s nothing to be worried, the next MX-5 will be at least as fun as the ones before. Just make sure you start saving for one of them and keep close to find out more info on the matter as soon as it will be available.
