Mazda has a rather interesting approach when it comes to presenting the all-new MX-5 Miata to the world. For one thing, the carmaker only brought one example of the sportscar to the Paris Motor Show this year. In a way, this means the French event was treated with almost the same importance as... the past weekend’s Cars and Cofee Irvine.
A just-as-Soul-Red example of the 2016 MX-5 Miata was present at Cars and Cofee in California. OK, there was a bit of a difference, since the Paris Motor Show days allowed one to also climb aboard the sportscar, which didn’t happen in Irvine. We’re just ranting a little bit here, because we would’ve like to have more than one example of the little thrill machine in Paris.
For one thing, it wasn’t too difficult for the 2016 MX-5 Miata to visit the aficionados event, since Mazda’s North American headquarters is located in Irvine. Just like it happened back on the Paris floor, the folks over at Cars and Coffee weren’t fully aware of what they were being treated with. That’s because Mazda still hasn’t made things clear regarding the engine compartment population, at least not entirely
So far, we know the US will get a SkyActiv 2.0-liter unit, while the rest of the markets will receive a 1.5-liter SkyActiv mill. On other Mazda models, the units deliver 155 hp (157 PS) and 99 hp (100 PS), respectively. Nonetheless, the carmaker used the Paris Motor Show to let it slip that all the engines offered have been specifically tuned for the MX-5 Miata.
At least when it comes to the 2-liter mill, you shouldn’t fear any underpower issues. We’ll remind you the new SkyActiv chassis has allowed the car to shed about 220 lbs (100 kg). The car now tips the scales at about 2,260 lbs (1,025), which means that its power-to-weight ratio is actually a little bit better than that of the 2015 model.
