The W205-gen Mercedes-Benz C-Class will finally receive its long-awaited coupe variant (C205) in November, but a debut date hasn’t been set yet for the soft top convertible C-Class (A205). If our intuition is correct, then it’s possible for both the two-door coupe and convertible Mercedes-Benz C-Class to be launched at the same international venue.
Our carparazzi spotted the three-pointed star automaker’s R&D team testing the upcoming A205 in Sweden. From the looks of it, we’re dealing here with a 4Matic-equipped prototype, sporting two oval-shaped exhausts. The latter detail is what led us to believe we’re dealing with a C 300 model, which is expected to develop 256 horsepower from its 2-liter turbo I4.
The powertrain range might also include a less powerful variant of the previously mentioned 2-liter force-fed petrol, as well as a twin-turbo 3.0 V6 with around 333 horsepower. It’s not known if Merc will AMG-ify the C-Class Convertible, 4-liter twin-turbo V8 of the C63 S and all, but we are certain that two turbo diesels will be offered for those customers that are missing the point of a luxurious soft top convertible.
Based on the same Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) we know and love, the previously mentioned powertrain options list may also add a C 450 AMG Sport model, animated by a twin-turbo vee-six mated to the same old 7G-Tronic automatic. The interior is a carbon copy of the W205, but adds three buttons on the transmission tunnel: one that lets you control the AirCap, one for the roof and one for the wind deflector.
Just as the mules spied beforehand, this one sports faux taillights and the same swirly camouflage that would make Jimi Hendrix go out of his head by simply looking at it for 5 minutes. As for the soft top roof, it’s a given we’re dealing with a proper 3-layer canvas here. Last but not least, look forward to Mercedes offering air suspension as a hideously pricy option on the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible.
