While the R171 looked nice outside but was a bit cheap inside, the current R172 is what the SLK should’ve been from the beginning - the smaller brother of the SL. Introduced in 2011, the third-generation Mercedes SLK is a bit of a dinosaur compared to the rest of the model lineup.
As it happens, only two AMG models (SLK 55 and the C63 Coupe) are still naturally aspirated, with the rest of the lot turning to the already classic bi-turbo system. Then again, the current SLK is in dire need of bi-turbocharged madness and the highly-anticipated cosmetic nose surgery.
About that rhinoplasty, what you can admire in the photo gallery below is a pre-production test car of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLK facelift, which will reportedly adopt the SLC nameplate according to the brand’s new naming strategy.
The taillights are carry over as well, but there’s something with the bumper.
Look very closely and you’ll see a more fluid design to the rear bumper and a mini diffuser flanked by a set of new exhaust exits. The two units are split in the middle, which makes us believe they're inteded for the AMG Sport model or the SLC 55 AMG.
Nevertheless, the new exhaust design is somewhat more curvaceous than the trapezoidal exhaust pipes of the current SLK. Overall, the rear fascia design is a notch better than nowadays, but let’s wait and see what the next set of 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLC spy photos will unfold for the little two-door tin-top.
