Slated to arrive in the EU as the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander facelift, what the Japanese carmaker presented at the New York Auto Show is a US-spec GT model animated by a 3-liter V6 engine codenamed 6B31. This powerplant churns out 224 HP and 215 lb-ft (291 Nm) to all the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

All other models from the 2016 model year (ES 2WD, SE 2WD, SE S-AWC, SEL 2WD and SEL S-AWC) come as standard with a 2.4L four-pot codenamed 4J12. On this occasion, Mitsubishi mated the engine to a CVT unit and managed to squeeze 166 ponies and 162 lb-ft (219 Nm).

Dubbed as the first Mitsubishi to showcase the marque’s all-new design language

Gone is the Gundam robot-inspired styling cues of the pre-facelift and in come a more dramatic front fascia design, redesigned headlamps and taillights, as well as a refreshed boot door and rear bumper.

Baptized Dynamic Shield, the styling language of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander does hike the appeal of the mid-size crossover SUV. But the real change is under the skin, where engineers worked managed to improve nearly everything.

On paper, we’re told that the 2016 Outlander is a more structurally rigid machine. Electric power steering and a re-engineered suspension come as the highlights of the revamped Mitsubishi GS platform.

Changes operated inside include an improved Rockford Fosgate touchscreen media system, a redesigned steering wheel, posher seating surfaces and accent trim.

Availability? Our two cents go on either the third or fourth quarter of the year.
