2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Facelift Debuts in Tokyo

Moments after the Japanese automaker announced that it will run an Outlander PHEV racecar at the 2015 Baja Portalegre, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV made its online debut all the way from Japan. With updated styling cues mirroring the ICE-only models, the plug-in hybrid Outlander has the upper hand in terms of eco-friendly tech and fuel economy.

When it will go on sale in Japan on July 9th, the PHEV facelift will hold a starting price of ¥3,211,920. According to current exchange rates, that equals to $26,206 or €22,948. Mind you, don’t expect the US an EU-spec models to be that cheap by the time they will arrive in dealership lots, but to mirror the price tag of the pre-facelift Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

When you put the normal Outlander and PHEV side by side, you’ll see that the horizontal bars on which the Mitsubishi 3-diamond logo sits are now finished in a glossy black hue. A further visual difference is represented by a more dramatic bumper design as opposed to the solely ICE-powered model.

As far as the inside is concerned, the PHEV boasts a different type of gear shifter and steering wheel. Due to the added fuel-sipping tech, the PHEV model only comes with five seats instead of seven.

For financial year 2015, Mitsubishi plans to move some 1,000 PHEV facelift units per month in Japan. The company is mum on horsepower and torque figures, but on the other hand, we’re told that the pure electric range increased by 0.6 km while fuel efficiency increased by 1.6 km/L. That’s 60.8 km (37.7 miles) and 20.2 km/liter (4.95 l/100 km; 47.5 US mpg; 57 UK mpg).

In terms of colors, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can be had in Ruby Black Pearl, Quartz Brown Metallic, Black Mica, Technical Silver Metallic, Titanium Red Metallic, Red Metallic and White Pearl as the car pictured in the gallery. If you’re planning on buying a US-spec model, Mitsubishi USA informs: “a PHEV version of the Outlander made for the USA is in development and will be available in Spring of 2016.”
