It was April when the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander facelift was presented to the world. The Japanese brand is offering the mid-size crossover only with petrol and turbo diesel engines at the present moment, with an US-spec Outlander PHEV facelift in the cards for later this year or early 2016.
According to Mitsubishi North America, “a PHEV version of the Outlander made for the USA is in development and will be available in Spring of 2016. Unfortunately, pricing is not available at this time.” Fortunately though, we got our first glimpse of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV facelift as it was presented to Japanese dealers this past weekend.

Courtesy of LiveDoor.jp, the first six photographs in the adjacent gallery showcase the Outlander PHEV without any camouflage whatsoever. Details and rather limited right now, but the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is probably going to use a reworked PHEV powertrain from the current model.

On the Japanese domestic market, the outgoing Outlander PHEV is rated 18.6 km/L (5.37 l/100 km or 43.8 US mpg) and 60.2 km (37.4 miles) of EV mode range. The hybrid powertrain is juiced up by a 12 kW battery that powers two electric motors with 82 HP (60 kW) and 137 Nm (101 lb-ft) of torque at their disposal. Then there’s the 2-liter petrol engine, which is good for 121 HP (89 kW) and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft). Combined, system output is 203 horsepower (149 kW).

We’ll have to wait and see if these figures, at least the EV range, will be replicated in the official specifications sheet of the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, but look how neat the mid-size eco-crossover looks! If it weren’t for the plates that read Outlander PHEV, we couldn’t have differentiated it from the US-spec 2016 model year powered exclusively by gasoline.

Oh, almost forgot - the JDM 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV costs ¥36,793, translating to €26,530 or $29,815. Considering that the current model is €39,900 in Germany (without incentives), expect the Euro- and US-spec 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to be just a tad more expensive than the Japan-spec model.
