The WRX and WRX STI were already as fresh as daisies, but that didn't stop Subaru of America from introducing 2016 model year upgrades on both cars. The changes are minimal, but they should make the guys at IIHS very happy.
These performance sedans already have the Top Safety Pick rating, but the latest EyeSight systems that have been introduced should make them even safer. The driver assist package is now equipped with Lane Assist on the WRX with the Lineatronic transmission (CVT).
Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are also available for some models.
Unfortunately, EyeSight is expensive. It's available as part of a premium package that also includes, keyless start, and cornering-responsive foglights and will set you back $4,095. You can't get it with a manual though, probably because auto-braking needs to cut the clutch automatically.
Mechanically, both cars are virtually the same as before. The WRX was first to arrive with its all-new 2-liter turbo making 267 last spring, followed by the STI with a carry over 305 hp 2.5-liter. But Subaru is finally letting buyers opt for a smaller, less intrusive wing on the WRX as an option.
Do you want the STI to look cool and have extra downforce, or do you prefer rear visibility? It's up to you now.
Prices have also changed. A base WRX costs $26,595 (plus $795 destination), which is $300 more than before. Meanwhile, the STI is 200 bucks more, costing $34,695
Also new is the 6.2-inch Starlink infotainment system, added to both cars. It includes a reversing camera as standard while models with optional navigation use a 7-inch screen.
