When Land Rover placed the Range Rover badge on the Evoque, they basically secured a first-row seat for the stylish compact crossover within their line-up and now that the mid-cycle facelift is approaching fast, we expect the Brits to be just as generous with the model. We’ve recently spied the Evoque facelift prototype, with the changes going much deeper than it might appear.
The form

The spied test vehicle was shy when it came to its front apron, so this was covered in camo. Moreover, the wheel arches also showed signs of modifications, while the rear apron also offers clues on the “work in progress” status of the prototype.

Nonetheless, the visual makeover brought by the Evoque’s mid-cycle revamp is the... least important element here, even when it comes to styling. That’s because no bumper of grille can rival the “wow” effect of the upcoming Evoque Cabriolet derivative.

We spied the Evoque Cabrio earlier this month - the three-door model will be gifted with a canvas roof and it appears that the compact greenhouse will only add to the Evoque’s visual appeal. As for the practicality, we’ll have to see the finished product in order to discuss this. Still, the efficient packaging of the Evoque has impressed so far, which means we’re expecting the automaker to once again shine in this area.

The function (new engines, Ingenium diesel for the US)

The current Evoque can be had with either a 2-liter turbo petrol engine (Europe and US) or a 2.2-liter diesel (Europe only), which is offered in two states of tune. While the 2014 model year update has introduced a host of goodies, led by the ZF nine-speed automatic, the oil burners still aren’t available in the US.

While the Duratorq units are impressive in terms of both efficiency and performance, they do not comply with the current emission regulations in America. This is not an issue though, since the facelift will see the Evoque receive the Ingenium family of four-cylinder engines.

We’ve already seen these units on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, for instance and we’re talking about the most efficient diesel ever to have equipped a Land Rover. To be more specific, the two-liter oil burners also comes in two power flavors, offering 163 PS (160 hp) with 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) and 180 PS (177 hp) with 430 Nm (317 lb-ft).

Expect both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions to be offered. We’ll leave the FWD models to the city cruising and remind you that the AWD Range Rover Evoque is rather good with the offroad stuff.

Land Rover has confirmed that diesels will finally be included in its US offerings and frankly these couldn’t come soon enough - the market is hungry for such engines, with Audi’s increasing TDI sales being an example as good as any.

Land Rover engineers should complete their work on the Range Rover Evoque facelift later this year, so expect the crossover to bow as a 2016 model in the US.
