Now that the sixth-gen Camaro is upon us, Chevy engineers can start taking advantage of the new platform’s benefits and our spy photographers have spotted them doing just that. We are talking about the next ZL1, which is now well into its development cycle.
To get a better idea of the visual changes that will be brought along by the ZL1, you can check out the photo comparison in the gallery below. The comparo shows the differences to the 2016 Camaro prototype.
It all starts with the bold lip spoiler up front, while the thirstier air intakes complete the updated front fascia. However, the most important element seems to be the hood - some of the spied prototypes showed a removable camouflage panel concealing an air extractor. It seems GM has learned from all the Corvette Z06 heat soak debates and wants to avoid a similar episode.
Still, we mustn’t forget the Alpha platform has left behind the greatest issue of the 5th-gen Camaro, namely the extra weight.
One of the spied prototypes showed more sculpted rocker panels, while moving to the rear of the machine reveals a more muscular rear spoiler. The performance scenery is completed by larger tailpipes.

Now, about that supercharged 6.2-liter V8
After all, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 should use the same LT4 V8 as the 2016 Corvette Z06 and the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V. As for the output that will be offered on the muscle car, nothing is official yet, but it’s not difficult to do the math - while the outgoing ZL1 feeds the rear wheels with 580 HP, the LT4 machines mentioned above deliver 650 and 640 hp, respectively.
