When Nissan introduced the second-generation Titan pickup truck at the 2015 NAIAS, the manufacturer presented the biggest and most capable model in the lineup. The thing is, the Titan XD cost big bucks and it sits bang in the middle of half-ton light-duty and three-quarter ton heavy-duty territory. Simply put, it’s too big and too much for most people out there.
A year after introducing the Titan XD, the Japanese outfit decided to debut the 2017 Nissan Titan. Without the XD affixed to its name, the Titan becomes a simple, honest-to-God pickup truck though there's little in the way of visual differences between the siblings. The workhorse is a half-ton with a strong resemblance to its more competent brother.
Underpinned by a separate chassis from the Titan XD, the Titan in Crew Cab configuration is 14.7 inches (37.3 cm) shorter. On the other hand, the overall width remains unchanged at 79.5 inches (201.9 cm). Other than not sharing any common chassis components down to the lug nuts, differences between the two are also found under the hood.
Available in 4x2 or 4x4 drive with three cab sizes (Crew Cab, King Cab, Single Cab) and three lengths for the bed (5.5, 6.5, 8 feet / 1.67, 1.98, 2.43 meters), the 2017 Nissan Titan is motivated by a naturally aspirated V6 engine as standard.
Details about this six-cylinder are to be announced at a later date. For those who prefer eight cylinders, the 5.6-liter V8 from the 2017 Nissan Armada is an option worth ticking. Sorry, folks, but the 5-liter Cummins turbo diesel isn't available on the 2017 Nissan Titan.
The 390 horsepower and 401 lb-ft (543 Nm) V8 is matched to a 7-speed automatic transmission. Similar to the XD, the Titan half-ton is available in five trim levels: S, SV, PRO-4X, SL, and Platinum Reserve. Canton, Mississippi is the stomping ground of the 2017 Titan, with the truck slated to go on sale this summer.
